Christmas Spanish tradition

Today we are going to talk about Spanish Christmas traditions and we are going to compare them and see the difference between Romanian traditions. The first thing that should be noted is that within customs we can encompass many things such as typical foods, celebrations and activities.

When we think of Spanish Christmas, the first thing that comes to mind are family meals and all that they entail. That is, from the typical food such as prawns, ham and desserts such as nougat, neulas, polvorones and many others, to the typical conversations with relatives that we do not usually see very often. It is for these reasons that many people love Christmas and the sense of union that it creates, and for many others it is a time that they prefer to spend as soon as possible so as not to have to deal with possible annoying relatives and their uncomfortable questions. But I honestly believe that this is not something exclusive to Spain, I think that this kind of dinner is common in many other countries with all the clichés associated with them.

However, if we must highlight a Spanish custom that is not done in other countries, I think that the 12 grapes that we should eat in the new year are the perfect example. According to tradition in the last 12 seconds of the year families gather to eat a grape for each of these 12 seconds, this is done to have good luck in the coming year.

And finally it should be noted that in Spain the wise men are celebrated and not Santa Claus, this is because in the Bible the three wise men from the East gave the child Jesus different gifts on the day of his birth, and is celebrated on the 6th from January.

And according to what I have been able to read the most important tradition of Romania is that children go from house to house singing Christmas carols and reciting poetry and legends during the Christmas season. The leader carries a huge wooden star called steaua, which is covered with glossy paper and decorated with bells and colored ribbons.

On the other hand, in Romania, mothers usually prepare traditional foods during these Christmas dates, such as Cozonac, a kind of panee toné, or something like that, which is a sweet bread, filled with chocolate cream and nuts or homemade cakes and specific preparations of pork that is killed a week before Christmas, in a very old ritual class, a tradition that has been kept for centuries.

Although the traditions may seem somewhat different or the typical foods may be very different between the two countries, what really matters is maintained in both, the Christmas spirit and the illusion.
